The controversy over renaming Ravenshaw University in Cuttack has intensified following police action against a BJD MLA and two party leaders for allegedly inciting a group clash. BJD MLA Byomkesh Roy along with Lenin Mohanty and Akram Khan were implicated after a torch rally led to a scuffle near the university's main gate.

Malgodown police took action based on a complaint from a research scholar at the university. The altercation allegedly involved students being manhandled by outsiders, escalating tensions. The BJD has fiercely criticized the accusations, claiming the rally was peaceful and conducted outside campus grounds.

The renaming issue has generated heated debates in the Odisha Assembly. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's suggestion to rename the university, originally named after a British bureaucrat, has met with sharp reactions from both ruling and opposition parties.
