On Friday, a sessions court granted bail to Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut after he contested his conviction in a defamation case initiated by Medha Somaiya, wife of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya.
Raut filed a revision application against his conviction and 15-day jail sentence issued by a magistrate's court. Appearing in person, the Rajya Sabha member sought bail, which was granted with a bond of Rs 50,000.
Previously, Magistrate Aarti Kulkarni had convicted Raut for defamation under IPC section 500, sentencing him to jail and imposing a Rs 25,000 fine. The sentence was suspended for 30 days, allowing Raut to appeal the decision, as he argued that the magistrate's order was flawed.
