Chandu Champion: Unsung Hero Murlikant Petkar Finally Crowned with Arjuna Award

Director Kabir Khan expressed immense satisfaction following the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports' decision to bestow the Arjuna Award (Lifetime) on para-swimmer Murlikant Rajaram Petkar. Khan, who chronicled Petkar's inspiring journey in the film 'Chandu Champion', remarked on the athlete's long-awaited recognition.
Khan described Petkar as a man who maintained his dignity despite feeling overlooked by the nation. Petkar, who sustained severe injuries during the 1965 war with Pakistan, showcased resilience by pursuing sports once recovered, ultimately achieving the distinction of being India's first Paralympic gold medalist in 1972.
The 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' director recounted his initial disbelief upon learning about Petkar's story, emphasizing the importance of honoring such heroes through cinema. The film's portrayal has thrust Petkar into the spotlight, with widespread media interest and new invitations for speaking engagements.
Actor Kartik Aaryan, who embodied Petkar's role in 'Chandu Champion', also celebrated the recent award announcement. Expressing personal connection to Petkar's life journey, Aaryan lauded the para-swimmer's unwavering spirit and hailed him as an unmatched sportsman.
Murlikant Petkar is set to receive this prestigious award from the President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 17, 2025, marking a significant milestone in his illustrious career.
