A Kolkata court on Friday rejected the bail plea of Sanjoy Roy, the primary suspect in the rape and murder of a woman medic at a state-run hospital. Roy will be held in judicial custody for 14 days, with the next hearing scheduled for September 20.

The courtroom saw physical presence from both legal teams, while Roy participated virtually. According to CBI sources, Roy began crying as the hearing commenced. His Legal Aid-appointed counsel argued for his bail, claiming he had been framed and had no involvement in the crime.

The CBI counsel, who arrived 40 minutes late, opposed the bail request, citing it could impede the ongoing investigation. Following a hearing of arguments from both sides, the judge ordered Roy's judicial custody for 14 days.

The judge expressed dissatisfaction due to the initial absence of the CBI's investigating officer and their lawyer. The case is being investigated by the CBI under orders from the Calcutta High Court. The ruling Trinamool Congress criticized the delay, calling it a deliberate attempt to undermine the judicial process.

On August 9, the body of the woman postgraduate trainee doctor was found inside a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested the following day by the Kolkata Police for his alleged involvement in the crime, which has sparked widespread outrage nationwide.
