Senior NCP leader Anil Deshmukh on Wednesday criticized the deteriorating law and order situation in Maharashtra under the watch of Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis. He claimed that criminals no longer fear the police.

Deshmukh's comments followed public outrage over two alleged sexual assaults on four-year-old girls in a Badlapur school and an attack on a police officer in Pune. 'Under Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis, there is no fear of police in the state. Police are being beaten up openly. There needs to be fear of police among criminals,' Deshmukh told PTI Video in an interview.

Highlighting the need for urgent legislative action, Deshmukh asked for the Centre to approve Maharashtra's Shakti Law, which prescribes the death penalty for heinous crimes against women. He alleged that the law has been pending for three years due to government inaction.

Deshmukh also criticized the state government's Mukhyamantri Mazi Ladki Bahin Yojana, alleging it is being used for political gain ahead of upcoming assembly elections. Furthermore, he accused Devendra Fadnavis of pressuring him to implicate major political figures and blamed Fadnavis for his previous arrest on corruption charges. Deshmukh is currently out on bail.
