BJP national spokesperson CR Kesavan criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, reminding the Trinamool Congress leader about the powerful provisions in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for delivering strict punishments to those guilty of crimes against women and children. This response came after Banerjee wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging for stringent central legislation to tackle heinous crimes like rape and murder.

In a video message on August 31, Kesavan remarked, "Mamata Banerjee's letter has exposed her dishonesty and highlighted her failure in implementing the robust legal framework provided by the central government for women's protection." This statement follows the alleged murder and sexual assault of a female trainee doctor on August 9 in Kolkata, which has sparked a heated exchange between the BJP and Mamata Banerjee, with the BJP calling for her resignation.

Kesavan emphasized that the BNS is among the most comprehensive central laws available. He questioned Banerjee's criticisms, suggesting she was attempting to mislead the public. "The BNS includes strong provisions for severe punishments for crimes against women and children. Contrary to Banerjee's claims, there is a central law with mandated provisions to dispose of cases within a set timeframe," he added.

Further accusing Banerjee of delaying the transfer of the case to the CBI, Kesavan stated, "It's ironic that the CM, who could have handed the case over to the CBI within the first week, talks about timely justice." The Calcutta High Court has since ordered the transfer of the case from local police to the Central Bureau of Investigation.
