American rapper Macklemore has canceled his October show in Dubai, protesting the UAE's alleged support for Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a key player in the country's civil war. Macklemore made this announcement via Instagram, highlighting the urgent and horrific situation in Sudan.
He stated, 'Until the UAE stops arming and funding the RSF, I will not perform there.' Dubai, known for its glitzy political and tourism hub, frequently hosts international artists and sporting events. Macklemore's decision to cancel due to politics is notably rare.
The UAE's foreign ministry and global media office did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for a comment. The Sudanese army has accused the UAE of supporting the RSF, allegations that the UAE denies although deemed credible by U.N. experts. Efforts for a ceasefire, including talks in Switzerland, have not reduced the conflict, affecting half of Sudan's 50 million population. Macklemore, prompted by the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, expressed his intention to use his platform for activism, urging others to do the same.
