A Naxalite with a Rs 5 lakh bounty on his head surrendered in Chhattisgarh's Dhamtari district on Thursday, according to local police.

The individual, Ajay alias Aghan, served as a 'deputy commander' and an area committee member of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) in Sitanadi, a police official stated. Active in the movement since 2010, he was implicated in multiple cases of violence, including murder and attacks on security forces, from 2017 to 2021. He planted IEDs with the intent to harm security personnel, added the official.

Ajay's surrender was motivated by disillusionment with the Maoist ideology and exploitation by higher-ups, the official said, adding that he has been provided with Rs 25,000 in aid and will be rehabilitated under the state government's surrender and rehabilitation policy.
