Jailed Kashmiri parliamentarian Rashid Engineer has approached a Delhi court seeking regular bail in a 2017 Jammu and Kashmir terror funding case. The court on Tuesday issued a notice to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and directed it to file its response by August 28.
Rashid, who defeated former chief minister Omar Abdullah in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, has been in jail since 2019. He is currently lodged in Tihar jail after being charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in the alleged terror funding case.
The court had previously granted Rashid custody parole to take the oath of office on July 5. His name surfaced during an investigation of Kashmiri businessman Zahoor Watali. The NIA had filed a chargesheet against several individuals, including Yasin Malik, Hafiz Saeed, and Syed Salahuddin. Malik was sentenced to life imprisonment last year after pleading guilty.
