Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was safe after what the FBI described as an assassination attempt on Sunday while golfing at his West Palm Beach, Florida, course. Secret Service agents fired on a gunman spotted near the property line with an AK-47-style assault rifle, officials said.
Identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, of Hawaii, the suspect was seen by agents approximately 400 to 500 yards away from Trump. The agents engaged the gunman, firing at least four rounds around 1:30 p.m. (1730 GMT), according to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw. The suspect dropped his rifle and fled in a black Nissan vehicle.
Law enforcement officials issued an alert which led to the suspect's arrest by Martin County deputies on I-95. Trump reassured his supporters of his safety in an email following the incident. This event follows a previous assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, emphasizing security concerns ahead of the Nov. 5 election.
