An armed confrontation near the Israeli Consulate in Munich resulted in the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old gunman on Thursday morning. The incident occurred around 9 a.m., not far from a museum documenting the city's Nazi-era history.

Authorities believe the shooter was planning an attack on the consulate, coinciding with the 52nd anniversary of the 1972 Munich Olympics attack. During the shootout, police were alerted to the gunman in the Karolinenplatz area and responded, leading to the fatal exchange.

"We have to assume that an attack on the Israeli Consulate possibly was planned early today," stated Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann. The suspect, an Austrian with Bosnian roots, had previously come to the attention of Austrian authorities but was not deemed high-risk at the time. Authorities are investigating a possible connection to Islamic extremist ideology.
