The Supreme Court has intervened in the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, setting a hearing date for August 20. Protests demanding justice for the victim have swept across West Bengal for the tenth consecutive day.
In unprecedented solidarity, football fans from rival teams East Bengal and Mohun Bagan gathered near Salt Lake Stadium, prompting the cancellation of the Kolkata Derby in the Durand Cup due to concerns over law and order. The CBI, now in charge of the investigation, has intensified its scrutiny of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, examining his communications around the time of the incident.
Meanwhile, Kolkata Police have been criticized for summoning prominent figures, including politicians and doctors, over allegations of spreading misinformation. As healthcare services remain crippled due to a strike by junior doctors, various groups, including medical students and artists, continue to protest, calling for justice and improved safety protocols in medical facilities.
