Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal has openly criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the limited implementation of fast-track courts in West Bengal. Speaking to the media on Saturday, Meghwal described the recent incident in Bengal as 'very shameful,' noting widespread sorrow and criticism. Meghwal questioned Banerjee's response to the situation and pointed out her calls for fast-track courts while highlighting her lack of contribution to their formation.

Meghwal further emphasized that Banerjee has only established these courts in four to five districts and is unfairly blaming the Centre. 'This is very unfortunate,' he added. The minister's comments come after Banerjee wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 22, urging the establishment of fast-track courts for sensitive issues to ensure speedy trials. In response, Union Women and Child Development Minister Annapurna Devi also criticized the West Bengal government for failing to implement essential safety measures for women and children.

In a letter to Banerjee, the Union Minister mentioned that although 123 Fast Track Special Courts (FTSC) were allocated to the state, none are operational. The brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has sparked protests across the state and the country. The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of the hospital on August 9, leading to widespread demonstrations for justice and better security laws for healthcare professionals.

The case has since been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation by the Calcutta High Court, with Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, arrested in connection to the incident. The episode has ignited a war of words between the BJP and the TMC, adding further tension to an already charged political atmosphere. (ANI)
