Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dilip Ghosh on Saturday claimed that the West Bengal government was obstructing enquiries into the rape and murder of a Kolkata doctor and attempting to protect the accused. He alleged that state authorities were creating public confusion and destroying evidence, stating the police were uncooperative with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Ghosh added that under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's rule, 48,000 crimes have remained unresolved. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at the National Conference of District Judiciary in Bharat Mandapam, emphasized the need for more active enforcement of strict women's safety laws. He highlighted the urgency of quick decisions in cases of atrocities against women to assure their safety.
The rape and murder of the trainee doctor have led to widespread protests from doctors across various states, advocating for justice and better security laws for healthcare workers. The case has been transferred to the CBI following an order by the Calcutta High Court. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer at the hospital, was arrested in connection with the incident. This situation has fuelled a political clash, including demands for the resignation of Mamata Banerjee.
