The Indian Army has named Lt Gen Prashant Srivastava as the upcoming Corps Commander for the Srinagar-based 15 Corps, effective October 15, amid significant electoral developments in Jammu and Kashmir. The Union Territory will conduct elections from September 18 to October 1, marking its first polling in a decade. Results are due on October 4.
Lt Gen Srivastava's extensive experience in the Kashmir valley includes commanding a Rashtriya Rifles Force before moving to the Army Headquarters. Current Corps Commander Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai will retain his role overseeing the security of the Kashmir valley and the Line of Control until he transitions to his new position as Director General of Military Operations, replacing Lt Gen Prateek Sharma.
Known for his expertise in counter-terrorism, Lt Gen Ghai has closely collaborated with Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi during his tenure as Northern Army Commander. As the army gears up for these high-stakes elections, some key Principal Staff Officers at Headquarters will retire on October 31, with new officers already designated for significant roles, including the 3 Corps in Dimapur and the Army War College Commandant.
