The Delhi High Court on Friday issued a notice on a plea from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) contesting the interim bail granted to Ved Pal Singh Tanwar, who was arrested in connection with a money laundering case. Tanwar had been granted 56 days of interim bail on medical grounds by the Saket District Court on August 16.

Justice Neena Bansal Krishna has issued a notice on ED's plea and scheduled the case for a hearing in September. The ED had arrested Haryana mining businessman Tanwar in May under the Prevention of Money-laundering Act (PMLA), 2002.

The interim bail was granted to Tanwar to undergo surgery for an umbilical hernia and for post-surgery care. The court considered medical reports from jail authorities and granted bail for 56 days. Tanwar must receive treatment within the Delhi NCR and has been directed to surrender to jail authorities after his bail period ends.

Senior Advocate Pramod Kumar Dubey, along with Advocates S S Boparai, Siddhant Saraswat, and Aman Sharam, represented Tanwar. Dubey argued that Tanwar's medical condition falls within Superior Court guidelines for bail. He stated that surgery was essential for Tanwar, who suffers from multiple health issues, including umbilical hernia, gastric ulcer, and diabetes.

Opposing the bail, Advocate Zoheb Hossain and Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Simon Benjamin represented the ED. They argued that Tanwar's arrest stemmed from illegal mining activities in the Dadam area of Haryana, which had caused significant environmental damage and financial loss.

The ED launched its investigation following a Prosecution Complaint by the Haryana State Pollution Control Board against M/s. Govardhan Mines and Minerals for environmental violations. The firm was accused of large-scale illegal mining, which led to landslides killing five people.

During a search operation on August 3, 2023, unaccounted cash, documents, jewelry worth Rs 3.7 crore, Rs 26.45 lakh in cash, and a Mercedes car worth Rs one crore were seized. The ED claimed Tanwar had gained Rs 37 crore from illegal mining and invested in various properties. Tanwar was arrested in June to establish the money trail and identify other individuals involved in illegal mining.
