Following an appeal from the Supreme Court, healthcare professionals at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi have decided to suspend their strike. The protest was initially in response to a tragic incident at RG Kar Medical College, where a trainee doctor was raped and murdered.
"In view of the developments and our concerns being addressed by the Honorable Supreme Court, we hereby declare the strike to be withheld," the Resident Doctors Association said in an official release. They also requested residents to resume services from 8 AM on 23rd August.
Earlier, the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences also ended their 11-day strike and resumed services. The Resident Doctors Association of AIIMS stated, "In the interest of the nation and the spirit of public service, we have decided to call off the strike." The Supreme Court commenced its hearing on the Kolkata case, highlighting the need for healthcare professionals to return to work and assured that no adverse actions would be taken against them upon resuming duties.
The Supreme Court has initiated a 10-member National Task Force, including Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, to recommend measures to prevent violence and ensure safe working conditions for medical professionals across the country.
