Amid rising outrage over the alleged murder and sexual assault of a female trainee doctor in Kolkata, Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera has reiterated the need for stricter rape laws. Khera called on the ruling BJP to initiate discussions on the matter, urging for more stringent measures or a collaborative approach.

Speaking to ANI, Khera said, "We are constantly demanding that either the law be made more stringent for incidents like rape or that opinions be taken from all parties. Sit together, talk, and behave like a responsible ruling party. The BJP indulges in selective outrage."

Referring to recent rape incidents across the country, including the alleged assault at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, Khera emphasized the necessity for decisive action to curb increasing crimes against women. In a separate incident, a minor was reportedly gang-raped at a hospital in Rajasthan's Jodhpur, and other cases have emerged from Assam and Maharashtra.

In response to the Kolkata incident, the BJP called for a '12-hour Bengal Bandh' following police action against protestors during the 'Nabanna Abhijan' rally. On August 27, tear gas, water cannons, and lathi-charges were employed to disperse protestors on Howrah Bridge amid the national uproar over the RG Kar Medical College case.

The murder and alleged sexual assault of the trainee doctor on August 9 has sparked nationwide protests, with rallies occurring in various states, reflecting widespread public anger and demand for justice. (ANI)
