Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge raised alarms on Wednesday over the severe floods in Tripura caused by heavy rainfall, which have resulted in significant loss of life and widespread distress. Posting on social media platform X, Kharge voiced his concern, stating, "Deeply concerned about the flood situation caused by heavy rainfall in Tripura, where many people have lost their lives and about 5600 families have sought refuge in relief camps."

"Our deepest condolences to the bereaved families. They must be provided compensation promptly. The Centre and State Governments must implement immediate relief and rehabilitation measures. More NDRF and SDRF teams should be deployed in the flood-affected areas. Urgent provision of food and medical aid is necessary," he added. Kharge further appealed to Congress leaders and workers to assist those in distress in any way possible.

Over the past two days, relentless rainfall has wreaked havoc across Tripura, leading to severe flooding in multiple regions. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha emphasized that relief and rescue operations are the administration's top priority, with the state government continuously updating the central government on the unfolding flood conditions. Initial assessments indicate substantial damage to homes, livestock, roads, electrical infrastructure, and crops.

Joint efforts by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local authorities are in full swing to rescue those stranded by the floodwaters. Saha called the situation unprecedented, noting that the South district recorded an astonishing 375 mm of rainfall. He reported speaking with Union Home Minister Amit Shah to request additional NDRF teams, with Shah assuring full support. Saha expressed his gratitude for the prompt assistance.

In a social media update, Saha stated that all district, NDRF, SDRF, and local officials remain on high alert and are collaborating to support affected individuals. He urged social organizations, NGOs, and citizens to stay vigilant and contribute to relief efforts, saying, "Your every iota of contribution can make a significant difference."

Previously, landslides triggered by incessant rain claimed seven lives, with two individuals still untraced. Chief Minister Saha quickly convened a review meeting on Tuesday to evaluate the ongoing flood situation and strategize measures to mitigate the impact on affected areas. He directed officials to ensure no effort is spared in delivering timely support and relief. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts continued heavy to very heavy rainfall over Tripura for the next two days. (ANI)
