The Supreme Court on Tuesday constituted a 10-member National Task Force to make recommendations on preventing violence and ensuring safe working conditions for medical professionals. Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin is among the members.

This move follows nationwide protests sparked by the rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata. The court has mandated that the task force submit an interim report within three weeks and a final report in two months. The task force will also draft an action plan to prevent gender-based violence and ensure a dignified workspace for interns, residents, and non-resident doctors.

Furthermore, the Supreme Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the West Bengal government to file status reports on the rape case and a mob attack incident at RG Kar hospital, respectively. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud expressed concern over the safety of doctors nationwide and criticized the publication of the victim's personal details.

The CJI also questioned Kolkata Police's actions, noting that although an unnatural death case was registered, there was no FIR suggesting it was a clear case of murder until late at night. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal contested this claim.

The Supreme Court's initiative was praised by the FAIMA Doctors Association, which called for the inclusion of representatives from various levels of medical professionals. The court emphasized the need to establish safety standards across the country as more women join the workforce.
