The Union government has unveiled a commemorative coin to mark the birth centenary of former five-time Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Kalaignar M Karunanidhi. The announcement was made by Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai on Monday. He stated that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his cabinet approved the state's request for the Rs 100 coin.

The commemorative coin was released in Chennai on Sunday, during an event graced by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, and Union Minister of State L Murugan among other dignitaries. Rajnath Singh paid tribute to M Karunanidhi, describing him as a revered leader, a titan of Indian politics, and an advocate for social justice.

Rajnath Singh further highlighted Karunanidhi's contributions to Indian democracy, noting his efforts in promoting quality education for the marginalized and supporting women and children. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for his support, emphasizing the grand success of the ceremony, and underscored Karunanidhi's immense impact in politics, literature, and society.
