Former National Commission for Women (NCW) chief Rekha Sharma has raised serious allegations, stating, 'It does not seem that this is the work of one person,' in connection with the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Sharma also accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of trying to protect the perpetrators involved in the incident.

'It does not seem that this is the work of one person; there are others involved whom Mamata Banerjee wants to protect. Now that the case is with the CBI, a full investigation will reveal what she was trying to conceal,' Sharma remarked. On August 12, Sharma commented on the tragedy, questioning the safety of women in West Bengal and urging that the CBI should have been involved from the beginning. She called for the imposition of president's rule, criticizing the West Bengal government's inability to safeguard women.

The incident, which occurred on August 9, involved the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor while on duty, sparking nationwide strikes and protests by the medical community. On Wednesday, the protest grounds and hospital campus at RG Kar were vandalized by a mob, leading to intervention by security personnel to disperse the crowd.

In response to the ongoing protests, the Kolkata Police have imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, around the Medical College and Hospital for a duration of seven days, starting from Sunday, August 18. (ANI)
