U.S. Intelligence Uncovers Russian Plot to Assassinate German Defense CEO

U.S. intelligence discovered earlier this year that Russia planned to assassinate the chief executive of German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall, Armin Papperger, according to a CNN report citing five unidentified U.S. and Western officials. The plot was part of a series of Russian plans to target defense industry executives in Europe supporting Ukraine's war effort.

The United States alerted Germany, leading to German security services successfully safeguarding Papperger. Rheinmetall stated that 'necessary measures are always taken' in consultation with security authorities. The company, a major producer of artillery and tank shells, increased production following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev had previously threatened retaliation against any Rheinmetall facility in Ukraine. This follows Rheinmetall's announcement of a joint venture with Ukrainian conglomerate Ukroboronprom and plans to open an ammunition factory in Ukraine. In February, Papperger's garden house was set on fire by alleged far-left activists, underscoring the heightened threat levels. German officials, including Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, emphasized the importance of robust security measures in the face of Russian aggression.
