Union minister Nitin Gadkari has emphasized the importance of using stainless steel for construction in coastal areas to prevent incidents like the recent collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's statue at Rajkot fort in Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra.
Gadkari argued that rust-resistant products should be prioritized for structures near the sea, reflecting on his previous experiences with substandard materials while serving as PWD minister.
The collapse of the statue on August 26 spurred political controversy ahead of Maharashtra's assembly elections and led to a look-out circular against contractor Jaydeep Apte. Police have also arrested structural consultant Chetan Patil for alleged negligence.
