A statue of Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a fort in Maharashtra's Sindhudurg district eight months ago, collapsed on Monday due to strong winds, according to officials. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde attributed the incident to wind speeds of 45 km/h, promising reconstruction and an investigation involving the Navy and PWD.

The collapse, which occurred around 1 pm at Rajkot Fort in Malvan tehsil, has been termed an embarrassment by the opposition. NCP state president Jayant Patil criticized the government for poor maintenance and prioritizing events over quality work. Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule called for a detailed probe and suggested blacklisting the contractor.

Local Shiv Sena figures, including Aaditya Thackeray and MLA Vaibhav Naik, echoed similar sentiments, alleging low-quality construction. Police have increased security at the site following the incident. The government emphasized a commitment to rebuilding the statue, unveiled last December to honor Shivaji Maharaj's contributions.
