Shooting Incident at Virginia State University Injures Four, Two in Custody

Early Wednesday at Virginia State University, a shooting injured four people. Two men were taken into custody for brandishing firearms but not charged with the shooting. Officers are investigating, and the campus was locked down until deemed safe. None of the victims are enrolled students.

Early Wednesday, a shooting at Virginia State University left four individuals injured, police reported.

Authorities detained two men at the scene and charged them with brandishing firearms; however, no charges have been filed regarding the actual shooting, according to a Wednesday afternoon police statement.

Officers arrived at the university, located south of Richmond, around 12:30 a.m. after reports of a shooting in a large crowd. The victims, two men and two women, were transported to hospitals with injuries that are not considered life-threatening, Chesterfield County Police confirmed.

The campus entered lockdown until safety was ensured, the university said.

University spokesperson Gwen Williams Dandridge noted that none of the victims are enrolled for the upcoming fall semester. Although classes commence next week, freshmen and student leaders have already arrived on campus.

The two 21-year-old men in custody face charges for brandishing firearms, and one also faces a charge for carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. Neither of the men are VSU students, and their connection to the victims, if any, remains unclear.

Chesterfield County and university police are conducting a thorough investigation. Officers did not discharge any firearms during the incident, authorities said.

According to the university's website, approximately 4,000 students are enrolled at VSU.
