The All India Guards Council has launched protests at various railway offices against the Railway Board's decision to replace iron trunks with trolley bags. The guards, who use these trunks to store norms, equipment, and personal belongings, argue that the switch compromises safety.
In response, the Railway Board cited benefits such as cost savings from ending porter contracts and reduced train detention times. However, the guards' union claims the move imposes extra duties on train managers and endangers safety due to the ease of stealing trolley bags containing detonators.
The Delhi High Court has directed the Railways to settle all representations by the Guards Council, but allegations of contempt of court have emerged as divisions proceed with the change. The issue remains contentious, even as the Railway Ministry moves forward with its plans.
