Jakob Ingebrigtsen Smashes 3,000m World Record at Silesia Diamond League
Norwegian runner Jakob Ingebrigtsen broke the 3,000 metres world record by over three seconds at the Silesia Diamond League meet. He finished with a time of 7:17.55, surpassing the 1996 record by Kenya's Daniel Komen. Ingebrigtsen, 23, was awarded $50,000 and had recently won the 1,500m in Lausanne.
Norwegian athlete Jakob Ingebrigtsen shattered the long-standing 3,000 metres world record at the Silesia Diamond League meet, finishing in a phenomenal time of seven minutes 17.55 seconds. This time eclipsed the previous record set by Kenya's Daniel Komen in 1996 by more than three seconds.
Ingebrigtsen, 23, was visibly shocked as he crossed the finish line and saw his record-breaking time. His previous best over this distance came in September last year, when he was nearly three seconds slower than Komen's mark.
The Norwegian runner celebrated his achievement by posing with a cheque for $50,000 awarded for breaking the record. Just three days prior, Ingebrigtsen had exacted a small measure of revenge over American Cole Hocker, winning the men's 1,500m in Lausanne with a time of 3:27.83. This victory came two weeks after Hocker had taken Olympic gold in Paris.
