India's para-sports landscape has seen a remarkable transformation over the past 20 years, driven by increased support and changing perceptions. As a result, legendary Paralympian Devendra Jhajharia is confident that India can secure 50 medals by the 2036 Paralympics.

Back in 2004, India began its journey with just one gold medal. Fast forward to 2021, and the country clinched five golds among 19 medals in total at the Tokyo Paralympics. The paradigm shift in how para-athletes are viewed and supported has been immense, highlighted by the successes of athletes like Jhajharia himself, who won gold in 2004 and 2016, and a silver in 2021.

India's ambitions don't stop there. The nation is gearing up to bid for the 2036 Olympics and Paralympics, with the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) President Jhajharia expecting to break into the top 10 of the medal tally by then. The PCI is actively identifying and nurturing young talent, ensuring that future games see even more participation and success in para-sports.
