Manchester City and Ilkay Gundogan appear to be on the brink of reuniting. The former German midfielder was seen at the airport Wednesday, reportedly en route from Barcelona to Manchester to finalize his return to City on a one-year contract, with an optional additional 12 months.

Neither Manchester City nor Barcelona have publicly commented on the deal for the 33-year-old Gundogan. The midfielder departed City after captaining the team to a historic treble-winning season in 2022-23. He spent seven years with the English club before moving to Barcelona for a new challenge and quickly became one of Xavi Hernández's preferred players during his single season with the Catalan team.

However, Barcelona's fragile economic situation seems to necessitate the club parting with the veteran playmaker under new coach Hansi Flick. Gundogan's exit should aid Barcelona in registering new midfielder Dani Olmo, which it has been unable to accomplish due to La Liga's financial regulations requiring balanced spending on wages and transfers.

Alongside Olmo, Barcelona boasts a deep roster in creative midfield positions, including Pedri González, Frenkie de Jong, Fermin López, and, once recovered from injury, Gavi Páez. Additionally, Gundogan, who captained Germany at the recent European Championship, has retired from international football this week.
