Durham's seamer Matthew Potts has been called up to England's squad for the first Test match against Sri Lanka, scheduled for Wednesday at Old Trafford.

Potts steps in for the injured Ben Stokes, who tore his hamstring during the Hundred domestic competition. Despite a stellar summer in 2022, Potts featured in just one Test last year. He now has an opportunity to prove himself over Olly Stone.

In another change, Dan Lawrence will open the batting after a nearly 2 1/2 year hiatus, replacing Zak Crawley, who is out with a fractured finger. Lawrence, originally an opener for Essex, has recently returned to form with Surrey. Ollie Pope will captain the team in Stokes' absence, with Harry Brook as vice-captain.
