Football fans erupted in protest near Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium following the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The stadium was set to host the iconic derby between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Emami East Bengal FC for the ongoing Durand Cup.
However, the highly anticipated first derby of the season was abandoned due to security concerns arising from massive protests over the tragic incident. Demonstrators assembled outside the stadium, leading to police detentions on Sunday evening.
As the situation escalated, authorities decided to relocate the second quarter-final match of the Durand Cup from Kolkata to Shillong for safety reasons. Remarkably, fans from both rival clubs united in their protest, emphasizing that the issue transcended their football allegiance.
One protester stated that the police initiated a lathi charge despite the peaceful nature of their demonstration. Fans questioned the sudden presence of a large police force, given earlier claims of insufficient security personnel for the match.
Another demonstrator echoed these concerns, highlighting the inconsistency in the police's actions. The incident has brought together supporters of both clubs, stressing the collective stand against the atrocity faced by an Indian woman.
