The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, on charges of corruption and financial irregularities. Shehzad Poonawalla, a BJP leader, stated that this arrest is significant for seeking justice for the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered on August 9.
According to Poonawalla, this action is overdue as the BJP had been alleging corruption charges against Ghosh since 2023. He accused Mamata Banerjee's government of shielding Ghosh thereby delaying justice. Poonawalla has questioned when Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee will resign, accusing her administration of prioritizing the protection of Ghosh over justice for the victim.
CBI sources confirmed that the Anti-Corruption Branch of the CBI arrested Dr. Ghosh along with three others, including two vendors and one additional security personnel, based on alleged financial misconduct at the hospital. The Calcutta High Court had earlier ordered the CBI to investigate these claims, leading to an official FIR against Ghosh on August 24.
Dr. Ghosh had also undergone a second polygraph test as part of the investigation into the rape-murder case. The Calcutta High Court has mandated the CBI to submit a progress report by September 17. The Supreme Court has also directed CISF to take over the security of RG Kar Medical College following the violent incident. The trainee doctor was found dead on the hospital premises, stirring outrage and calls for enhanced security.
