Alex Hodgman Set for Historic Debut in Australia's Revamped Lineup Against Georgia
Former New Zealand prop Alex Hodgman is poised to make his Australia debut after being named in a heavily altered lineup for Saturday's match against Georgia in Sydney. Hodgman, capable of representing both New Zealand and Australia due to his Fijian-Australian heritage, will make history if he plays.
Former New Zealand prop Alex Hodgman is set to make his debut for Australia after being named on the bench in a significantly revamped lineup for Saturday's clash against Georgia in Sydney. The 31-year-old, who played four tests for the All Blacks in 2020, qualifies for the Wallabies through his Fijian-Australian father and joined the Queensland Reds earlier this year.
If Hodgman takes the field, he will become the first player in the professional era to represent both New Zealand and Australia. The Wallabies' new coach Joe Schmidt has made 10 changes to the starting 15 that defeated Wales 36-28 in Melbourne last Saturday. Among the changes is the inclusion of uncapped winger Darby Lancaster, who will start on the left wing.
Schmidt has overhauled the tight five, introducing hooker Billy Pollard and loosehead Isaac Kailea to join Allan Alaalatoa in the front row. The second row will feature Angus Blyth and Nick Frost. The revamped lineup will be tested by a Georgian side fresh off an upset win against Japan. Australia previously beat Georgia 35-15 in the group phase of the World Cup in France.
