U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken called for the renewal of a U.N. mandate to support an international security mission in Haiti to counter armed gangs controlling parts of the capital and beyond.

The mandate, set to expire in early October, has shown limited results due to insufficient troops and funding. At a press conference in Port-au-Prince, Blinken stressed the need for increased financial support and personnel.

During his visit, Blinken met with Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille and presidential council head Edgard Leblanc Fils. He also announced $45 million in additional humanitarian aid for Haiti and planned to encourage further contributions at a U.N. General Assembly meeting.
