A major cleanup operation has commenced for Delhi's INA drain, spanning 6.5 kilometers and clogged with more than 50,000 tonnes of waste. This follows an inspection by Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena, officials from the Raj Niwas announced on Wednesday.

Triggered by Saxena's visit on Tuesday, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) initiated a desilting effort using heavy machinery at three strategic points along the drain. According to officials, the drain is located in the INA Market area and hasn't been cleaned in several years.

The drain, which feeds into the Kushak Drain and ultimately the Yamuna River, faces severe clogging from garbage, overflowing sewage, and monsoon rainwater. This has led to significant waterlogging in nearby areas. Saxena directed breaking sections of the drain's side walls to allow better access and the construction of a permanent ramp for future maintenance. Additionally, he instructed that a fence be built around the drain to combat further dumping from informal settlements along its banks.
