Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena intervened late Tuesday night to resolve a standoff in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections. Saxena directed the MCD commissioner to appoint deputy commissioners as presiding officers for the upcoming ward committee polls, after Mayor Shelly Oberoi failed to make the appointments.

The LG's intervention, citing special powers granted under the DMC Act for the 'larger public interest', ended uncertainty over the elections scheduled for Wednesday, September 4. This move followed a central gazette notification that empowered the Delhi LG to constitute various authorities, boards, and commissions, enhancing his role in the capital's governance.

Earlier, Mayor Oberoi had declined to nominate presiding officers, arguing an undemocratic election process. She had urged for a restart of the process and a week's time for nominations, citing fairness and adequate notice to candidates. This led to critical responses from the opposition and accusations of delaying the democratic process.
