The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) ward committee elections began at the agency headquarters under stringent security on Wednesday.

This marks the first polling since the unification of the MCD in 2022. The elections were delayed due to a political deadlock between the AAP and BJP.

Security arrangements in and around the Civic Centre have been intensified to prevent possible confrontations. Paramilitary personnel and local police are stationed at the site.

Councillors will elect chairpersons and members for 10 of the 12 zonal-level ward committees. No nominations were made in two zones, City SP and Keshav Puram. Voting will occur in two clusters across different zones.

Rohini, Najafgarh, West, South, and Central zones will vote at the Hansraj Gupta Auditorium, while Karol Bagh, Shahdara South, Shahdara North, Civil Lines, and Narela zones will vote at the Satya Narayan Bansal Auditorium.

The election will proceed via secret ballot per the Delhi Municipal Corporation Regulations, 1958. Both AAP and BJP councillors have expressed hope and apprehension regarding the election outcome.
