Security has been significantly increased around the Civic Centre in Delhi as tensions rise between the opposition BJP and the ruling AAP ahead of the MCD's ward committee elections on Wednesday, officials reported.

A company of paramilitary personnel, along with Delhi Police officers, has been deployed to maintain order and prevent any incidents during the polls. Instructions to avoid any untoward incidents have been given, according to a senior police officer.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena intervened late Tuesday, instructing the MCD commissioner to appoint deputy commissioners as presiding officers for the elections after Mayor Shelly Oberoi refrained from doing so. This last-minute directive, utilizing special powers under the DMC Act, aims to resolve the electoral uncertainty in time for Wednesday's polls. Oberoi had previously protested the election process, halting proceedings and demanding a week for nominations.
