Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has declined to appoint a presiding officer for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) ward committee elections slated for September 4. She cited concerns over what she described as an undemocratic process, pointing out the inadequate notice period for filing nominations.

Mayor Oberoi highlighted that the brief timeframe provided compromises the election's fairness. 'The timeframe for filing nominations and other procedural aspects of election law is of paramount importance to the entire electoral process,' she stated. She directed the Commissioner to restart the nomination process, demanding at least a week's notice to ensure fairness and adequate participation.

'The election notice, issued on 28.08.2024, did not give enough time for candidates to file nominations, which is undemocratic,' she added. Meanwhile, the Leader of the Opposition, Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh, has criticized Oberoi and the Aam Aadmi Party, accusing them of stalling development and being afraid of facing the elections.
