Seven people lost their lives and some are missing in Indonesia's North Maluku province following severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall, local authorities reported on Sunday.

The local search and rescue agency, Basarnas, said that heavy rain since Saturday triggered floods on Ternate island, affecting the city of Ternate. 'Our team is still conducting efforts to evacuate the victims who were hit by landslides and carried away by the flood,' Basarnas stated, adding that two people were found alive.

News outlets Detik.com and Kompas TV reported 11 fatalities, although a Basarnas official has yet to confirm the death toll. In a related incident, flash floods and mudslides in West Sumatra province claimed over 60 lives in May.
