Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Joe Phaahla, announced on Wednesday that the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) has successfully restored full operations following a cyber attack in June that severely disrupted essential health services in the public sector.

The cyber attack had a significant impact on the NHLS, which is a critical component of South Africa’s public health infrastructure, managing a network of 230 laboratories that serve over 85% of the country’s population. This service is vital for clinical outcomes and patient diagnosis, with more than 70% of healthcare decisions relying on their work.

Dr. Phaahla, who oversees public health entities under the Department of Health, was briefed by the NHLS Board and Executive Management on the progress made in restoring operations. He expressed gratitude for the swift and tireless efforts that led to the successful rebuilding of the NHLS's information technology systems and infrastructure.

In response to the recent hacking incident, Dr. Phaahla urged the NHLS to take decisive measures to fortify its information systems against future threats. He welcomed the entity’s commitment to investing in advanced cybersecurity technologies and implementing new protocols to enhance the security and resilience of its digital infrastructure.

“These improvements demonstrate the NHLS’s dedication to maintaining the highest service delivery standards. Strengthening its systems will ensure that future challenges are met with minimal disruption, allowing it to continue providing critical health services to the country with confidence and integrity,” the Department of Health stated.

The department has pledged ongoing support to the NHLS and other public health entities, ensuring they can effectively contribute to the public health system and fulfill their mandates.
