Floodwaters surged through several villages in Bihar's Bhagalpur district on Tuesday after a section of the Ganga river embankment gave way, according to officials.

They reported no casualties, emphasizing that the water levels are receding, and affected villagers have been relocated to safer areas.

The Water Resources Department (WRD) stated that continuous high levels of the Ganga had put pressure on protecting structures in Bhagalpur. As the water started to recede from August 19, the river's current intensified, causing 60 meters of the Ismailpur-Bindtoli embankment to collapse.

The breach created a flood-like scenario in the Karari Teentanga, Budhchak, and other regions within the Gopalpur division. However, prompt evacuation ensured no loss of life.

Addressing the situation, Bihar Water Resources Department Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary noted that essential repair materials have been brought in, and two teams of senior WRD officials are on-site to oversee immediate repairs and rescue operations.

The officials attributed the flooding to incessant rainfall in Bihar and catchment areas in Nepal, causing several rivers, especially in the Kosi-Seemanchal region, to flow above danger levels.
