Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi on Sunday chastised the MCD commissioner over the city's increasingly poor garbage disposal situation. She issued directives for improved waste collection and disposal.

In a letter to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) commissioner, Oberoi highlighted the worsening condition of garbage disposal across Delhi, especially in the West and Central Zones.

Oberoi noted that for several days, garbage collection in these areas has been sporadic, leading to waste accumulation on streets and in bins, with unbearable stench from decomposing waste. Despite repeated notifications to the commissioner, no notable progress has been observed.

She highlighted a prevalent blame game between MCD officials and waste management contractors, criticizing the MCD machinery for ground-level failures. Oberoi instructed the commissioner to enforce proper garbage collection and disposal citywide and to take stringent action against negligent officials.

The mayor also mandated daily joint inspections with the commissioner from August 20 to September 2 across MCD's 12 zones to ensure cleanliness and sanitation, emphasizing that the responsibility for maintaining hygienic conditions would rest solely on the commissioner.
