Harvey Weinstein has been hit with new criminal charges in New York, according to a prosecutor in court on Thursday, as the Manhattan district attorney's office prepares to retry the former movie mogul following the reversal of his rape conviction. Jurors found Weinstein, 72, guilty of rape charges in 2020, but the New York Court of Appeals threw out the conviction in April for not receiving a fair trial due to improper testimonies.

In July, Manhattan prosecutors announced an investigation into additional violent sexual assaults reportedly committed by Weinstein. During a hearing before Judge Curtis Farber, prosecutor Nicole Blumberg revealed that a grand jury indicted Weinstein on additional charges, without specifying them.

Weinstein missed the hearing due to emergency heart surgery. His lawyer decried the pursuit of additional victims as unfair post-conviction overturn. Despite health and incarceration, Weinstein's retrial remains pivotal to the #MeToo movement. He serves separate sentences in New York and California for various sexual assaults.
