Disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein has been indicted on additional sex crimes charges in New York, Manhattan prosecutors revealed at a hearing on Thursday.

The indictment, which will stay sealed until Weinstein's arraignment on September 18, marks yet another legal challenge for the 72-year-old former Miramax co-founder.

Weinstein is currently recovering from emergency heart surgery at a Manhattan hospital, which prevented him from attending Thursday's hearing.

According to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office, prosecutors recently began presenting evidence of up to three additional allegations dating back to the mid-2000s to a grand jury.

The effort to retry Weinstein comes after his 2020 conviction on rape and sexual assault charges was overturned by an appeals court earlier this year. It is unclear whether the new charges will be part of the retrial or handled separately.

This development follows last week's announcement from British prosecutors that they would no longer pursue charges of indecent assault against Weinstein. Weinstein, a central figure in the #MeToo movement, maintains that all sexual encounters were consensual.

Weinstein is next due in Manhattan court on September 12, with his retrial tentatively set for November.
