In a dramatic turn of events, Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Tuesday accused Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju of violating parliamentary privilege. The accusation arose after Rijiju sought a clarification from the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, concerning the Congress party's stance on reservation for Muslims.
Tagore, speaking to ANI outside Parliament, expressed hope that the privilege committee would act against what he described as a breach of privilege and an insult to the House by Rijiju. He emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that no privilege committee has yet been established in Lok Sabha to address the issue.
The controversy erupted as Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha faced adjournments on Monday, with BJP leaders, including Rijiju and Union Health Minister JP Nadda, targeting Congress over Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar's remarks pertaining to the Constitution. In response, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh submitted a breach of privilege notice against Rijiju, accusing him of misleading the House.
