The Kyrgyzstan police have detained seven individuals suspected of orchestrating mass riots intended to topple the government ahead of upcoming local elections. According to a statement from the interior ministry, these individuals allegedly used national sports competitions in the capital city Bishkek as a cover to incite unrest.
Authorities claim that the suspects planned to call for violence and disrupt constitutional order for a power grab on November 17. Involved in the alleged plot are several foreign nationals and an ex-deputy prosecutor general. The police seized weapons, a large amount of vodka, water, rice, and a horse, purportedly intended for riot preparation.
Russia, which hosts a military base near Bishkek, has been in constant communication with Kyrgyzstan regarding the nation's security situation. The former Soviet republic, bordered by China and Kazakhstan, has a history of political instability, with this being the latest incident in a series of civil unrest episodes.
