Colorado Voting Systems Security in Spotlight After Password Exposure
A spreadsheet on the Colorado Department of State's website included partial passwords for voting systems. The department asserts there's no security threat to the state's elections. Swift actions were taken and CISA was informed. The passwords were partially exposed online since August.
The Colorado Department of State acknowledges that a spreadsheet on its website inadvertently contained partial passwords to components of the state's voting systems. However, officials assure the public there's no threat to the integrity of the November 5 general election.
A statement from the department clarified the breach, explaining that the spreadsheet contained a concealed tab with the passwords. Though these were exposed, election security remains uncompromised, as other measures ensure ballots are not affected.
Hope Scheppelman of the state's Republican Party highlighted the gravity of the error, noting over 600 passwords were exposed across most counties. Immediate action was taken, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has been informed.
