The violence erupted during a rally held by Gurez MLA Nazir Ahmad Khan, also known as Gurezi. As he toured his constituency to express gratitude for the recent election support, his convoy was ambushed in Gujran, the village of his political opponent, BJP leader Faqir Mohammad Khan. The MLA claims that the attackers were relatives of his opponent.
Conversely, BJP leader Faqir Mohammad Khan's son, Aijaz Ahmad, accused NC supporters of inciting the violence by provoking BJP supporters in front of their homes and using aggressive language. Ahmad called for intervention from the BJP leadership and local authorities to ensure security in the Gurez-Tulail region.
